So cruel: Why do farmers in Switzerland make big holes in cow bellies?

Why do farmers in Switzerland put large holes in the belly of cows

If you have already seen a hole in the stomach of a cow, you must have wondered what it is. Well, this hole is called a “rumen fistula”, a hole connected to a tube that reaches the inside of the stomach, and it is there for a specific reason and not for the purpose of the sight only.

Rubber caps are used to close this opening and open it when needed. After the success of the breakthrough and placing the rubber band on the cow’s crater, farmers and veterinarians can follow the digestion processes in their stomach and provide a good and useful diet.

During the ꜰɪsᴛᴜʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ᴘʀᴏᴄᴇᴅᴜʀᴇ, the cow is ɴᴜᴍʙᴇᴅ with local anesthetic and when the sᴜʀɢᴇʀʏ is completed, the animal goes right back to eating (the fistula doesn’t affect their normal activities or life span). Cows are known as ruminants, meaning that they have a four-chamber stomach. The rumen — where the opening is made — is the largest compartment and contains all of the good ʙᴜɢs  and ʙᴀᴄᴛᴇʀɪᴀ that are needed to digest food. When a cow can’t digest food, because bad ʙᴀᴄᴛᴇʀɪᴀ has entered the digestive tract or the good ʙᴀᴄᴛᴇʀɪᴀ has ᴅɪᴇᴅ, these fistualted cows can help. This process called “rumen ᴛʀᴀɴsꜰᴀᴜɴᴀᴛɪᴏɴ.”

With rumen ᴛʀᴀɴsꜰᴀᴜɴᴀᴛɪᴏɴ, scientists can directly extract the healthy gut ʙᴀᴄᴛᴇʀɪᴀ and other micro-organisms from the rumen in the cow and transfer the good microbes into other sick cows to jump-start their digestive tract. The ꜰɪsᴛᴜʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ technique has actually been practiced for over 100 years to observe digestive processes in living animals.

However, the animal rights group has launched an online campaign demanding authorities ʙᴀɴ the device, adding that the use of cannulas was a “symptomatic of the way animals are considered as simple machines at our disposal”. Although many claim that the sᴜʀɢᴇʀʏ doesn’t ʜᴜʀᴛ the cows or reduce their life ᴇxᴘᴇᴄᴛᴀɴᴄʏ, the ᴍᴜᴛɪʟᴀᴛɪᴏɴ still has a four- to six-week recovery period, in which there’s no doubt that the animals are uncomfortable. In a video released by the group, they said: “As citizens, we call on the ministers for research and agriculture to immediately ʙᴀɴ experiments aimed at increasing the productivity of animals.

The animal rights group added: “For Sanders and those involved in intensive livestock production, which is the norm in France, these animals are nothing more than production machines, a basic raw material at our disposal.”

In response to the L214 complaint, Avril Group said that this analysis is essential for many advances in breeding and, in particular, to improve the digestive health of millions of animals, reduce the use of antibiotics and reduce emissions of nitrates and methane related to livestock. He said: “For Sanders, these cows are just milk-producing machines that need to have their settings optimised. Today, dairy cows produce on average 27 litres of milk a day, which is five times the daily requirements of a calf.”
