J.R. Smith, a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers, describes the first time he touched his premature child as one of the “best days” of his life. A month after his wife Jewel Harris announced that she had given birth to their daughter Dakota extremely prematurely, Smith uploaded a photo to social media depicting the emotional first time he held Dakota. Today is one of my life’s most memorable days.
Today is the first time I get to hold my youngest child! God is Awesome! #DakotaStrong,” Smith, 31 years old, captioned the photo on Instagram.
Smith and Harris, who have been married since last August, posted a video to Uninterrupted on January 7 announcing Dakota’s premature birth. J.R. stated in the video, “We have extremely important news” “Hi, everybody,” Jewel added. “We decided to share with the world what has transpired in our family over the past week. We are aware that many of you wished us well during the pregnancy of our beautiful baby girl, but she arrived five months early.
Her name is Dakota, and she is five days old and weighs one pound. Jewel then explained the couple’s motivations for reaching out to the public. “We are aware that we are not the only family experiencing this, who has experienced it, or who will experience it in the future.” Therefore, we’ve decided to share our current situation with you. Please remember us in your prayers, and we will do the same for you.

J.R. and his family stay by Dakota’s side while she remains hospitalized in the NICU. Harris has been updating her blog, mykotabear.com, with information about Dakota. “I am so thankful to have witnessed this day; for over two hours, she and I enjoyed each other’s company. The numbers on her monitors indicated that this experience was phenomenal for her, while the look and smile on my face indicated the same thing for me,” Harris writes on her blog. “Next in line was daddy, also known as poppa bear. When he was skinning and grinning, I could feel his energy, which was vibrant and contagious.”
