If you live in Freeport and spend time around Basin Bayou, you’ve probably seen him. Local residents, particularly fishermen, have been observing a massive alligator in the small bayou throughout the summer. On Friday night, at least five boats filled with gator hunters were hoping to catch a glimpse of him again.
Eventually, he was taken down by two men and a boy who hooked him, lost him, and then found him again. The alligator, measuring 13 feet and 6 3/4 inches, is believed to weigh almost 1,000 pounds, making him the ninth-largest ever killed in the state of Florida.
Finally, they fastened him to the boat’s cleats and dragged him to shore. It required seven men and Cade to haul him out of the water and into a freezer truck. Dalton, a gator and hog-hunting guide, stated that Bass Pro Shops had contacted him about buying the alligator’s skin for display.
An officer from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission came to see the alligator and estimated that it weighed between 900 and 1,000 pounds, according to Morrison. The creature put up a tough struggle.
He first made an appearance around 1 a.m. but escaped after a 45-minute confrontation.
They went to the grassy shoreline and shone lights into the water when they discovered the alligator in around 2 feet of water. After a couple of hours and a lot of rope burns, they subdued him.
