After trying to continue, the left-hander pulled out when the score was level at 5-5 and with just a week and a half until Wimbledon begins, faces an anxious wait to see if she will be fit to play.

The Russian will face the winner of the match between Russian Daria Kasatkina and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the second seed, next.

In the previous round of the Berlin tournament, Anna Kalinskaya won against Japanese qualifier Nao Hibino (2-6, 6-4, 6-2).
